Jim & Carol's Story
World Travelers

Jim & Carol both grew up in small towns in Illinois. They knew each other in high school and started dating in college. They’ve been married for more than 50 years and have four children and several grandchildren. Bob was a banker and Jane was a history teacher. They are avid bridge players, love to travel and started a travel club at their Horizon Bay community.

How did the two of you get the travel bug?
I met Carol in a world history class in college. I decided to take the class on a lark and I liked her sense of adventure. We both realized that we liked reading about other countries and learning about other people. When we first got married, Retirement Living- World Travelerswe made it a point to go on weekend trips to other cities around us. Once the kids were born, we started taking much longer trips. We all piled in the van and off we went. Those trips were so exciting and fun, we drove to Florida, California and other places. We still talk about those trips today.

Tell me about your trip of a lifetime?
Over the years, while we were raising our kids, Jim and I reminisced about that history class we took in college. We thought about all the countries we wanted to visit and we just kept saving our money. Once the kids were grown up and we were helping out less with the grandkids, we finally did it! We took our first trip; it was a European cruise in the Mediterranean. We visited five countries and met so many different people. I think we took 20 rolls of film. After that, we made it a point of planning a big vacation each year.

I hear the two of you started a travel club, right?
Yes, we did. Once we moved here we met so many people who shared our same passion for traveling. Jim and I plan the trips and we’re able to get special pricing and discounts. Next week we’re spending a weekend in Washington D.C., and 10 of us will be going on the trip. But what we really enjoy is coming home to share our stories with everyone here. We make an event out of it. Jim plays a slideshow on the computer (we have one of those digital cameras now). We end up talking and remembering all of those other adventures for hours and hours. It gives us lots of ideas for our next trip.
