Katherine's Story

Katherine’s hometown is Atlanta, Georgia, where she was considered an expert seamstress and she loved swimming and taking ballet lessons. She also started Sunshine Swimmers, a swim club at a Horizon Bay community.
 
What’s the story behind the swimming club you started at Horizon Bay?
Oh yes; Elizabeth, Mary, Wilma and me – we get up bright and early each day and meet at the pool at 8 a.m. to swim some laps. Alex from the Horizon Bay team always stops by to say "hi" and cheer us on. He’s an early bird, too, and he’s the one that gave us the nickname "Sunshine Swimmers."

I hear you were a star swimmer in high school?
Wilma and I were both “stars” of our local YMCA swim teams. So you can imagine there’s some friendly competition when we get out there and swim our morning laps! I also used to coach swimming at the local high school for years. So swimming is really in my blood – I’m so happy I’m able to continue it here.
 
What do you enjoy most about your daily swim sessions with your friends?
Well, it’s a way to exercise, but it’s also time the girls and I look forward to spending together. We swim hard, but we laugh hard, too! Today, friendship is the part of swimming that I enjoy the most.
