Are retirement living communities rental properties or do you buy them? Retirement living communities can be either rental properties or an endowment “buy-in” property. Most of Horizon Bay’s communities are rental properties. 

What is independent living? Independent living is for people who want to enjoy the benefits of living among people their own age in a safe environment without the hassles of home ownership. Independent living communities typically offer services and amenities like transportation, dining, activity programs and housekeeping.

Do retirement living communities offer transportation services? Yes, most communities offer transportation services at varying levels.

What types of resident programs are offered in independent living communities? Resident programs vary and can include: exercise classes, art classes, movies, reading groups, day trips, computer classes, fitness centers and theme dinners.

What is assisted living? Assisted living is a special combination of housing, personalized supportive services and healthcare designed to assist residents with the the activities of daily living. Some of these activities include dressing, eating, mobility, bathing, shopping and laundry. Residents usually live in private apartments. Assisted living offers more healthcare services than independent living but less than skilled nursing.

What types of services are offered in assisted living communities? Services vary by community and can include: two to three meals per day, housekeeping, transportation, assistance with the activities of daily living, access to health and medical services, 24-hour security, emergency call systems, health promotion and exercise programs, medical management, laundry services, and social and recreational activities.

Can I receive a tax deduction for assisted living or nursing home services? Yes, within certain guidelines, assisted living and nursing home service fees can be tax deductible. Ask your tax advisor to see if your situation applies under IRS Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses and The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).

What is memory care? Memory care is for residents who have Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Residents usually live in a separate area with many of the same amenities as assisted living residents, such as apartments, dining, activity programs, and housekeeping. Horizon Bay offers Traditions, a secure living area where programs are individually tailored for each resident’s needs. 

What is a short-stay program? Short stays are ideal for older adults living with family members who are away on vacation, go on a business trip or become ill themselves. Short stays also provide an opportunity for prospective residents to experience daily life at a community before making a commitment to move in. Most Horizon Bay communities offer short-stay services.

What is a health center? Horizon Bay's Meridian communities in Colorado and Texas offer residents the option of receiving 24-hour nursing care at one of our licensed health centers should additional care be required. 

What is skilled nursing care? Skilled nursing care is for residents that require 24-hour care and attention that goes beyond basic assisted living services. Nursing facilities are licensed by each state's Department of Heath Services. A nursing home facility can also treat patients that are recovering from a long-term illness or require rehabilitative care but don't need to be in a hospital. Horizon Bay offers nursing home care at Emerald Bay Manor, North Bay Manor, Sakonnet Bay Manor and South Bay Manor in Rhode Island.

What is home health care? Some of Horizon Bay’s communities offer residents the option of receiving home health care services. Services are provided by licensed, independent health care agencies. Services may include assistance with showering, dressing, preparing meals and exercising.
