Walter’s Story
Card Shark
Walter is a retired high school math teacher from Indiana. Walter not only has a way with numbers, he has a special talent for playing cards. From Bridge to Pinochle to Hearts, there isn’t a card came Walter hasn’t mastered. But, he’s considered an expert in Poker and says he’s known for his poker face. For nearly 50 years, Walter and his wife, Nancy, hosted weekly card games in their home, a tradition Walter brought with him to Horizon Bay.
You’re known around Horizon Bay as the Card Shark?
I’m used to it. That’s what my family calls me, too. You know the more you do anything, the better you get. Let’s just say I’ve been playing cards for a long, long time now and am happy I have the opportunity to share my enthusiasm with my new friends at Horizon Bay.
Does your family share your passion for cards?
My wife, Nancy, was very good at Bridge and my sons are pretty decent Poker players. My two sons join in on some of our poker games here at Horizon Bay. One time, they were accompanied by one of my favorite former students . . . quite a player himself.
Who won that game?
I prevailed.
I hear you teach residents how to play poker.
Yes, it combines my two loves: teaching and playing cards. You can take the teacher out of the classroom, but a teacher never loses his passion for teaching. Anyway, teaching keeps my skills – and my mind – sharp. Plus, the more people I teach, the more people I have to play with.
You mean the more people you have to beat . . . right?
Well, I don’t always win . . . In fact; Nancy beats me at Bridge almost every time!
So who’s in your Horizon Bay Card Club?
Fellow residents, their families, their friends. Really anyone who wants to be. We welcome anyone who enjoys good company, good food, good friends and a good challenge. We all look forward to meeting new people, hearing new stories, spending quality time together, talking about our families and, of course, perfecting our game.
