Margaret’s Story
Knit Knackers
When Margaret was a young girl in Ireland, her family owned a sheep farm. At a very early age, she learned how to knit and soon knitting became her passion. She was known about town as the Knit Knacker. While knitting for allied troops, Margaret married an American GI, they moved to Boston, where she lived for more than 50 years. A homemaker and mother of three, Margaret passed on her love of knitting to her daughter, Anne, granddaughter, Colleen, and great-granddaughter, Bridget. Now, Margaret lives at Horizon Bay, where four generations of O’Malley girls, along with many of Margaret’s new friends, founded a knitting group aptly named The Knit Knackers.
What exactly are the Knit Knackers?
My daughter, granddaughter and I were making weekly visits to Horizon Bay to knit with mom. When she introduced us to her new friends, we found that many of them loved knitting, too. Soon, we were all knitting together regularly. Someone suggested we needed a name. I told them about mom’s Knit Knacker nickname back in Ireland and it seemed perfect for us.
So what do you all knit?
At first, we made the normal sweaters, scarves, socks, etc. We were having so much fun, we started meeting more and more frequently. As a result, we had a lot – and we mean a lot – of completed and great looking clothing. One of our fellow Knit Knackers suggested we start donating some of it to charity. We loved the idea, so now we knit hats and booties for the premature babies at our local hospital.
Do you need to knit to be a Knit Knacker?
Absolutely not. We all started as knitters, but now The Knit Knackers are more about sharing and caring. We laugh, we share stories, we keep our minds sharp . . . and, of course, we knit. Anyone is welcome – encouraged – to join the fun.
