Meet Ericka
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are a friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
Since December 2009
What do you like best about your job?
The people! I enjoy working with our residents and hearing their stories. Also, the employees truly have a passion for the residents and work hard to make a difference in their lives.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
Spend time with my family and friends – because people are the most important thing we have in this world.
If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
Michael Jordan – I am an avid sports fan, and he completely transformed the way the game of basketball is played.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
I don’t have a favorite movie, but I enjoy suspense movies where the ending is unpredictable. I love a good mystery.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
I love Mexican food. The spicier the better!
In what ways do your residents inspire you?
My residents remind me every day that the best part of life is actually living it. They inspire me to enjoy the time I have with the people I love and never pass up the chance to try something new. I always try to put others’ needs first and take the time to listen to what others have to say.
Do you have any memorable experiences with a particular resident you would like to share?
I had a conversation with Pat one evening at her dinner table and she emphatically announced to the ladies at her table that I would be “just as ornery at her age as she is.” I told her I hoped to be armed with a Super Soaker squirt gun at her age and I would spray anyone who passed me by. She and her tablemates had a good laugh as they envisioned Pat wielding one of these squirt guns around the community. I brought one for her the next day, and watching her plan how to rig her cart with a holster for this oversized squirt gun was the funniest thing! I don’t know if she ever used it, but she definitely enjoyed telling the staff who her targets would be!
How do you honor your residents at your community?
We honor our residents by being kind, respectful, and welcoming to them every day. My favorite day of the month is the night of our Birthday Dinner. This is a special dinner where those who have birthdays in the month sit at the head table and we celebrate their birthdays by singing “Happy Birthday” and serving them cake and ice cream.
Tell us about a resident with a remarkable life story?
I enjoyed talking with Jan about her experiences as a nurse in the military during three different wars! She was an incredible leader and dedicated her life to saving others’ lives. She had so many stories of events that occurred during her service, and her face would light up at the memory of those times.
Tell us about a resident whose life changed for the better once they moved to your community.
Vern is a wonderful resident who lived here with his wife. He chose to move to a sister community when his wife became ill because he wanted to be with her. She passed away shortly after moving to this new community. Vern continued to live in the community for several months, but it was eventually decided he would move in with his family to be closer to them. A few short months later, Vern moved back into the Arvada Meridian with all of his friends and tells me daily how much he enjoys being here. This is his home and he does not plan on leaving for a very long time.
Employees
In what ways do your employees inspire you?
My employees inspire me by their incredible dedication to the people they serve in our community. From housekeeper, to wait staff, to the management team, everyone looks out for the safety and wellbeing of our residents and I am reminded daily of the caring nature of people.
How do you create a family-like atmosphere at your community?
I spend time with the employees, asking for their feedback and suggestions, thanking them for a job well done, and laughing with them. My family spends a lot of time laughing together and bringing that to work helps make the environment more enjoyable. It is important to be professional and remember that the care of our residents comes first, but it is also important to enjoy where you are, and that carries over to how our residents are treated.
Tell us about an employee who embodies one of our core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, professionalism or teamwork.
The Business Office Manager, Chris, exemplifies all of our core values on a daily basis. She has a genuine heart and passion for the work she does and the lives she touches every day. I can rely on her to handle any situation – whether with an employee or a resident – efficiently and professionally. She is honest, responsible, respectful, thoughtful, and caring. She truly embodies all the positive attributes that make the Arvada Meridian a wonderful community.
