Meet Matt
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
I have been in the retirement industry for four years and in health care for 19 years.
What do you like best about your job?
I love the opportunity to interact with our residents. Their stories are truly inspirational.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
I spend my free time with my wife and three children and coach two of my children’s basketball teams.
If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love the opportunity to meet my great grandfather. He was the first person in our family to come here from Italy. I would love to know how he arrived here and what it was like at Ellis Island during that period.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie is “The Lion King.” The movie embodies the need to be responsible, respectful and give back when you can.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
I am huge sushi lover and if I could, I would eat it every day.
In what ways do your residents inspire you?
Their stories. In my opinion our residents hold more information about our history then textbooks do!
Do you have any memorable experiences with a particular resident you would like to share?
The first time I met a resident and found out he was POW for three years, it made the hairs on the back of neck stand up. I was so inspired by his will to survive that I use his story as motivation when times seem tough.
How do you honor your residents at your community?
I honor them in two very simple ways. The first way is to give them the respect they deserve. The second is love. So many residents do not have family nearby and I believe it is my responsibility to give them the love they need. A simple hand on the shoulder, a smile and eye contact is a great way to let them know people care.
Tell us about a resident whose life changed for the better once they moved to your community.
There is a resident who bounced around from assisted living to independent living, then came to us. He was confused, unhappy and at times seemed lost. As we helped him get acclimated to our community, his attitude and demeanor changed for the better. He became more social with other residents, began to care more about his personal appearance, and now offers to assist us if we need him.
In what ways do your employees inspire you?
Our front line staff inspires me every day. When I hear them interact with the residents with genuine care and concern, it makes me feel proud. It’s amazing to see how these employees believe they have a purpose when they help a resident.
How do you create a family-like atmosphere at your community?
It is important to let staff know they are appreciated. I always make it a point to say hello to EVERY employee that I come across during the day. When they believe they are appreciated they carry themselves with a sense of purpose and are more willing to go above and beyond to assist our residents. Some of our employees work two full time jobs but you would never know it. I have an employee who works two full time jobs and when I see her, she is always smiling and no matter what is going on, she always puts the residents’ needs first even if it means delaying her break.
At The Pointe, we understand that deciding where to live is a big decision that deserves careful thought. We invite you to visit us, stop by for lunch or be a guest at one of our special events or classes. We look forward to meeting you.
