Meet Oscar
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are a friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
Since 1991 – I previously worked for AARP – American Association of Retired Persons. I’ve always enjoyed serving and working for seniors.
What do you like best about your job?
Being a daily advocate for the quality of residents’ lifestyle.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
Running and playing golf. I enjoy running to remain in better shape and playing golf for a challenge. I have adopted one resident’s personal mantra: “If you rest, you rust.” I’m doing my best to keep from rusting by not resting!
If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
Coach John Wooden – In basketball and life, he helped make others better and taught them how to succeed together. His “results” transcend the game of basketball, itself.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
Any movie at home with a bowl of popcorn – I rarely go to the movies because of my inability to walk past the concession stand.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
Lasagna and tiramisu – perhaps my love for delicious, but heavy food explains my need to keep running! Did I forget to mention dark chocolate?!?
In what ways do your residents inspire you?
Residents inspire me to age. Successful aging to me personally includes a positive attitude, gratitude, for life’s many gifts and enthusiasm to embrace life’s many challenges.
Do you have any memorable experiences with a particular resident you would like to share?
I have far too many wonderful experiences – from IL, AL and memory care. I feel extremely fortunate to become a part of their extended family. I’ve had tears from laughing and from loss. I’ll never forget “Louise”. After living at my community in Tulsa for a couple years, she moved to the Dallas area to be closer to her daughter. Unknowingly, our paths would cross again many years later as I made a site visit with Horizon Bay to her assisted living community in N. Richland Hills. It was a heartfelt reunion and poignant moment for me.
How do you honor your residents at your community?
We honor our residents by providing exceptional customer service. It costs nothing to be nice or wear a smile.
Tell us about a resident with a remarkable life story?
Each resident’s story is remarkable. I admire residents who continue writing their life story – making more memories in the later chapters of their lives.
Tell us about a resident whose life changed for the better once they moved to your community.
I often find that residents that did not imagine they’d enjoy retirement living (suggested by someone else) turn out to be the best spokespersons. I am so pleased with our Arboretum ambassadors – they help make others feel more than welcome. Peers can understand and explain better what it means to ‘allow yourself to enjoy it’.
How do you create a family-like atmosphere at your community?
I show my appreciation to staff by being approachable and accessible; helping demonstrate a working manager. Additionally, I count on others to be leaders that help me recognize employees regularly, treating them as our most valuable resource.
Tell us about an employee who embodies one of our core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, professionalism or teamwork.
I feel most every staff person has these qualities prior to employment with Horizon Bay. It starts with our hiring process, identifying special people who expect more from themselves than any job description we provide. I’m consistently proud of the comments I receive from residents and family, alike. Our team takes special pride in our distinctive retirement lifestyle at the Arboretum.
