Meet Calvin
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are a friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
How do you honor your residents at your community?
We’re always looking for ways to honor residents. Once a quarter we
recognize residents for service to the community by presenting awards
for service. We have many residents who serve in various ways which
include our Resident Association Board of Directions, Welcome
Ambassadors and Caring Friends, which is a group of residents in our
community who started a benevolent group to offer emotional support to
other residents when desired.
Tell us about a resident with a remarkable life story?
I’ve heard tons of stories but one of the most amazing is from John.
His story is set apart from others because of those he’s known
throughout his life. John worked for NASA and was friends with the
astronaut crew that first went to the moon.
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
Seven years.
What do you like best about your job?
This is a difficult question because there are many aspects of my job that I like. The absolute favorite part of my job is motivating team members and connecting them with their own core values.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
I enjoy spending time with my family and playing golf with friends.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
My favorite movie of all time is “The Rookie.” It’s a story about a man who had what he thought was an impossible dream and through a challenge from those around him he rose to a level he didn’t think was possible and his dream became reality. It’s also my 9-year-old son’s favorite movie. We watch it together two or three times a year.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
I’m a simple guy, so it might not be surprising that my favorite is simply good old fried chicken. I grew up in Tyler, Texas and my mother used to make the best fried chicken in the world, or at least in my world, so it has been a favorite dish of mine since that time.
In what ways do your employees inspire you?
I’m inspired as our employees seek to go higher in their own lives. This may be in attaining additional education, learning a new language or reading a book and applying the principles. A great example a team member I’m inspired by is our director of housekeeping, Leonor. Leonor took it upon herself to learn the English language and now speaks it fluently. But beyond that she’s been taking night classes for several years at a local college and will graduate soon.
Tell us about an employee who embodies one of our core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, professionalism or teamwork.
Many of our employees embody our core values. But a person who really stands out is Frank, our assistant maintenance director. Frank has been with the company several years and our residents love him. He does what he says he will do each and every time. He carries himself in such a way that when you meet him, you know you’re in the presence of a person with great character.
At The Terrace at Memorial City, we understand that deciding where to live is a big decision that deserves careful thought. We invite you to visit us, stop by for lunch or be a guest at one of our special events or classes. We look forward to meeting you.
