Meet Campbell
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are a friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
In what ways do your residents inspire you?
Our residents are of the great generation. Self-sacrifice and personal discipline were a way of life to most. These are qualities that seem to be adrift in our society at this time.
Do you have any memorable experiences with a particular resident you would like to share?
There are a lot. Suffice it to say that our community is like a family, we have our good moments and we have our sad moments. But we have them together, and it is a nice bond and more often filled with joy than sorrow.
Tell us about a resident with a remarkable life story?
I am often drawn to the stories of the World War II veterans. Theirs are tales of courage and valor. When I ask if they were scared, almost every one says the same thing. "There were thousands of us, average age about 20 (and most of us were lying about that); we were off on a grand adventure and too young and dumb to understand the danger of it all."
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
Since 1995, so that’s 18 years.
What do you like best about your job?
My day is always an adventure. I tell people that on any day we can be executives, marketers, plumbers, nursing aides, chefs, lawyers, painters, Bingo callers, confidantes and more. But best of all, we’re surrogate family members and professional servants.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
I spend time with my family. Coach my kids Hockey teams. Love to cut my own grass. Cooking is my hobby.
If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
My Grandfather on my Dad’s side. He passed when I was four. All my life when I have done well or done things not so well, my Dad always told me I was just like him. For better and for worse, I guess.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
I’m not a big sugar guy. Love salt – more of a junk food and barbecue addict. Peanuts in the shell are always around.
In what ways do your employees inspire you?
I am always humbled by the simple graciousness of their servitude. Our employees are people of real character who do honor to the art of serving others. They really take pride in making people happy. They know the value of the small, kind gesture as well of the heroics of noticing life-changing conditions that need immediate attention.
How do you create a family-like atmosphere at your community?
By treating everyone like family. It is a business first and foremost, however we are in the business of nurturing souls and that is what families do best.
Tell us about an employee who embodies one of our core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, professionalism or teamwork.
Eric, our area food service director, and our main chef and dietary director. Eric is passionate and cares deeply about our residents, employees and our community. He is always searching for new and better ways to improve not only his department but our community as well. He never backs away from a challenge. He holds himself accountable for his own high self-standards and contributes to our team in the same manner. Even when things seem difficult, he finds the silver lining and leads forward with an ever-present, positive, can do/will do attitude.
At Horizon Bay, we understand that deciding where to live is a big decision that deserves careful thought. We invite you to visit us, stop by for lunch or be a guest at one of our special events or classes. We look forward to meeting you.
