Meet Justin
Executive Director
The executive director, along with our friendly and professional staff, strives to create positive, stimulating ways for residents to continue living life with meaning and purpose. We are a friendly family where we treat residents like real people with real life stories.
Our community is a great story that includes heartwarming chapters and incredibly unique characters all in a wonderful setting. Here is the executive director’s story:
How long have you worked in the retirement industry?
Five Years
What do you like best about your job?
I enjoy meeting new residents and welcoming them to our great community. In addition, it is a great pleasure to honor and serve our residents. They have seen so many changes in their lifetime and listening to them reflect on their life experiences is truly an honor and a privilege.
What do you like to do in your free time and why?
In my free time, I enjoy going on walks with my wife and our two dogs (basset hounds). When we are not walking, we are traveling to new places. Other hobbies include watching baseball or football, church, politics, history, and outdoor-grilling.
If you could meet one person, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would want to meet two, Abraham Lincoln and Robert Lee. Lincoln came into office and immediately faced a nation divided. He was able to identify solutions, stayed the course, and was never deterred from the overall objective “one nation, under God.” Not only was he fighting to get the union back as one, he was dealing with internal struggles and he was able to balance all of this to produce victory.
Lee was on the other side of a divided nation. He was loyal to his home state, but was conflicted about a divided union. Despite a huge disadvantage, he was able to” out-general” his enemies and his men loved him for it. While I disagree with the overall reasons for going to war, I admire his ability to motivate and show leadership before and during the Civil War.
What’s your favorite movie and why?
The Natural. I have a real appreciation for the character, Roy Hobbs. Life doesn’t go the way that he had planned, but he makes the most of his opportunity. He never stops chasing his dream and at the end hits the ball into the lights. During difficult times in my life, I have often thought back to that movie.
What’s your favorite dish or dessert and why?
I like my wife’s King Ranch Casserole or her fajitas.
Dessert: Key Lime Pie.
In what ways do your residents inspire you?
Our residents inspire me everyday. They come into our community and they embrace life and live it to the fullest everyday. Some of the life experiences and challenges that they have lived through make me realize that I should embrace life as they do.
How do you honor your residents at your community?
We honor our residents every day, whether it is through a tribute to our veterans or honoring the life that they have lived. Each resident’s “Story Continues Here” and we want residents that move to our community to not stop what they enjoy doing, but to embrace it and have others experience their story. Everyday we show respect and honor our residents through the customized services that we offer each individual.
Tell us about a resident with a remarkable life story?
Mrs. Tilly, is 104 years young. She was born in Germany and left during the rise of Nazis. Her father put her on a boat for her safety and she left for the U.S. She married a man and moved to Houston. She has seen so many changes in her lifetime and we are truly blessed to have someone as distinguished as her at our community. She is one of three Centurions’ that calls The Terrace at Spring Shadows home!
In what ways do your employees inspire you?
Our employees inspire me everyday with their dedication and pride in their jobs everyday. They realize that our residents come first and treat them as they would a member of their own family.
How do you create a family-like atmosphere at your community?
We have family-like atmosphere at Spring Shadows. Many of our employees have been at our community for a long time; that experience is a major asset to the day to day operations of the community. We work together and treat each other as we would like to be treated always having a common goal in mind,” make a resident happy.” In addition we will have employee celebration and recognition with all of the employees present.
Tell us about an employee who embodies one of our core values – integrity, respect, responsibility, professionalism or teamwork.
Almost to a person, all of our employees embody the core values of our company. If I was to choose only one it would be Imelda. She is the Director of our Fresh Impressions team. She has been here for over 25 years and has seen many changes in her tenure. Despite the changes, she always has respect for the residents and her employees. In addition, she never asks an employee to do anything that she would not do herself.
